THE ROLES

Odyssey is very much an ensemble drama. There are no 'leads' per se, but workload will vary episode to episode.

Female Characters

Madeline Venture, Captain of the Argo.
(Mid-to-late Forties, any North American accent, or a New Zealand accent would also work.)

Personality: Captain Venture is the ultimate authority on the ship. She needs to be able to credibly give firm, decisive orders and speak with a tone of command. That said, we also see a much more unsure side of her personality through the series. She has doubts, she has moments of uncertainty... She's a very human character all around.

Voicetype: I suppose one half hard-nosed military leader, one quarter loving mother and one quarter 'how am I still here?' real person.

Audition Line #1
(Introducing herself to a potential enemy Firm, and staking her territory) “I'm Captain Madeline Venture, of the the Solar Federation Battleship, Argo.”

Audition Line #2
(With the weary tone of the truly overwhelmed, but trying to hide it) “We're already overhauling the Wave Engine. Now we have to take the E.C.S. offline to find a faulty conduit... NATURALLY the Admiral wants to come aboard for an inspection. -Sigh- Why me?”

Audition Line #3
(Explaining her actions to a superior officer. She will own her mistakes, but... She. Was. Right.) That freighter was running with less than 80% engine core containment. At the rate it was deteriorating, it would have breached in a matter of days. The freighter’s captain didn’t have the materials to fix it, and was trying to sneak a leaking reactor all the way from the frontier to Port Arcadia on Mars. The potential loss of life more than warranted my actions.

Ensign Thea Holtz - Assistant Pilot.

(Early 20's, any accent).

Personality: Thea is very reminiscent of Hermione Granger from Harry Potter. Frighteningly intelligent, but so lacking in social graces she winds up annoying most people. When we first meet her in the series, she's all business, very brusque, almost aggressively unfeeling. Soon though, she relaxes and opens up. Eventually, she becomes good friends with her shipmates, and develops strong feelings for Cade Morgan, the tactical officer.

Voicetype: Thea's personality is very complex, and she's hiding a big secret. She sounds very awkward in social settings, but extremely competent when doing her job.

Audition Line #1
(brusquely businesslike) I am TRYING to focus on my work, as you all should be doing as well. It is nice to meet you, Lieutenant Morgan.

Audition Line #2
(Awkward apology) I was very brusque with you. About that issue with the launch sequence? I do that sometimes; it's a failing in my personality that I'm trying to correct. I'm sorry.

Audition Line #3
(Her apology was dismissed with a 'don't worry about it, this gets her back up a little, then she realizes how pretentious she sounds and trails off) I DO worry about it Lieutenant Morgan. Because as bridge officers we have to work in close concert, and interpersonal friction can negatively affect the performance of our duties...

Lieutenant Junior Grade Addsison “Addie” Beaumont – Operations Officer

(F, early 20's, any accent)

Personality: Addie is usually irrepressibly happy, but not annoyingly so. She always looks for the bright, for the good, in people and situations. Addie is one of those people who makes friends like most folks breathe, instinctively and often.

Voicetype: Addie is very warm and kind. She always sounds like she's smiling.

Audition Line #1
(warm and friendly, talking about a dear possession of hers) My father gave this data pad to me when I was a little girl, so he could talk to me at night when he was away on business. I've kept it ever since and it... well, it's kind of silly... But Paddy was my best friend for a long time.

Audition Line #2
(Angry, talking to an enemy) I don't want to shoot you, but I will if I have to.

Audition Line #3
(crisp military discipline) Craft are approximately destroyer-class. The warbook has no match for the specific design.

Susan Haruna – Deck Crew, and Engineering

(F, early 20's, any accent)

Personality: Susan is a mechanical genius. She loves technology, particularly oddball or retro stuff like the Argo's outdated systems. Her relative youth can make her a bit timid in most social settings. That changes as she more than earns her place, but she has a bit of a rocky start.

Voicetype: Susan is the sort of cute and chipper character who all too often winds up a show's 'mascot'. She's capable of great vulnerability, but also taking charge when the time calls for it.

Audition Line #1
(she's worried for a dear friend who is very down. She finds him in a space suit outside the ship, and joins him. Being in space like that, TERRIFIES her, but she does it for him.) I... I saw you earlier. Passing in the hallway. You looked so sad. When I got off shift, I came looking for you but you were nowhere to be found. Kinu told me you were out here.

Audition Line #2
(Tired after a tough day of work, with more to come) Yeah, a lot of people are getting a crash course in starship E.C.S. lines. Hopefully we'll be done in a few hours though.

Audition Line #3
(frantic. The engine room has suffered small explosions, things are on fire and people are panicking) Where's Lieutenant Dobbs? … Dead... (deep breath) We are NOT going to panic. You there! Reroute all inputs from the secondary pipe to the tertiary! Jenkins! Up the throughput on the main! Reinforce it however you have to! You lot! Make sure nothing else is on fire! Don't trust the systems, use your damn eyes! Daniels, Joseph and Mickey, be ready to fine tune the E.C.S. Feeds! (pause) What the hell are you all standing around for?! MOVE!!! (Literally clap your hands twice) Like it already happened!

Liz Bishop – AWOL Marine.

(F, early 20's, any accent)

Personality: Reckless, headstrong and supremely confident. Liz is all about keeping her family safe.

Voicetype: Liz is very aggressive, but not so much that she sounds masculine.

Audition Line #1
(faking a bad southern accent) E'scuse me shugah? We seem to be terribly lost, could y'all help us out?

Audition Line #2
(crowing a victory) It's like I told you, sis. Never underestimate the power of a fine pair of boobs to distract the lesser mind.

Audition Line #3
Blink your headlights to 'Shave and a haircut.'(pause) Don't look at me like that. My sisters aren't military, and the youngest is just a kid. We needed a signal they'd both remember.

Mary Bishop

(F, late 20's or early 30's, any accent)

Personality: Maternal, calm and protective. The de facto mother of her odd little family.

Voicetype: Mary always sounds like she's just a bit shy of complete exasperation.

Audition Line #1
(Angry at her little sister) You were arrested?! We warned you to keep your head down! What were you thinking?!?!

Audition Line #2
(faking a bad southern accent) Ah told you! We shoulda turned right back at the junkshun! We been drivin all day, an now it's dark...

Audition Line #3
(confused) What? (her 'dead' fiance just turned up alive) Tyler! You're alive!!

Cindy Bishop

(F, late teens or early 20's, any accent)

Personality: The braty youngest sister, and the tech-obsessed hacker of the group.

Voicetype: Cindy always sounds militantly bored. She has a bad habit of chewing gum while talking.

Audition Line #1
(bored...so bored...) It's not like there's much to do around here beside comb through this mess. Mary's thrown herself into setting up housekeeping. Your dad, Liz, and Tyler are out 'training' or 'hunting' in the woods... (yawn) I thought the life of an outlaw would be a lot more interesting than this.

Audition Line #2
It's nice to meet you, Mark. (She sees Tech! Pretty, pretty tech! Ooooooooo Shiny!) That's a Sanada G-90, right?!

Audition Line #3
(dryly) Imagine my giddy anticipation...

Deela Rukali

(F, mid-to-late 20's, any accent)

Personality: Deela is an ace fighter pilot. She is so good her people call her 'The Sapphire Angel'. She's a bit arrogant, but has earned her swagger.

Voicetype: Deela always pushes the bounds of politeness. She knows she's the best and when she encounters a challenge, she relishes it.

Audition Line #1
(She's flying a shuttle. She hates flying the ungainly box) Argo Patrol, this is the Admiral's shuttle. Please assume formation with us... (this last is a bit of a joke) and disregard the rest of our escort. The Admiral believes in... (carefully chosen word) reciprocity.

Audition Line #2
(this should sound like a challenge) I hope we get a chance to fly... together sometime, Silk.

Audition Line #3
(shes about to defeat an incredibly skilled opponent) You won't be able to evade me forever, you know... It is only a matter of time before I end this.

Nara Vunken

(F, middle age, any accent)

Personality: A logical, strategic thinker. She takes great pride in the fact that she has not only ever been defeated, but that in a strategic situation, she can beat any foe within five minutes. She has an hour glass with five minutes of sand in it that she turns over when engaged.

Voicetype: Nara Vunken is a Valbarden. They speak very carefully, enunciating each syllable with precision. They do not use contractions, or obfuscate their feelings. Think Vulcans from Star Trek.

Audition Line #1
(Brimming with confidence) There is still sand in my hourglass. Plenty of time to defeat my foe, now that I know her mind. Had we been able to use OUR ships, and not these crude vessels...

Audition Line #2
(regret) I am the finest strategist of my people. In games, exercises of tactical thought, none have ever... Never has my hourglass run dry... (building anger) No opponent has lasted long enough. Let alone defeated me! (blood rage) Argo! I will scatter your ashes across the stars!

Audition Line #3
(shocked) You are risking our own people's lives in combat?!

Male Characters

Cade Morgan, Tactical Officer
(M, early 20's, generic North American accent)

Personality: Cade was a hotshot at the academy. He was top of his class and then some.... until his parents died in a shuttle accident. He fell apart and nearly flunked out. During this time, he grew extremely close to his older brother, Edward.

Voicetype: Cade has confidence in his abilities, but it can be shaken. He is quick to anger and tends to wear his heart on his sleeve. Beyond that, he sounds like the typical young anime stud.

Audition Line #1
(Cade is sad to be leaving, but he draws comfort from “talking” to his parents) Well Mom, Dad. I’m off. Now, don’t you worry, I’ll be fine. Just (pause) Look, it sounds so weird to say this to a photograph but… Watch over me? And Edward. Keep him safe. He sacrificed so much for me after you guys died… he deserves some happiness. Love you both.

Audition Line #2
(Expressing his worries to his best friend) Yeah, you were two years ahead of me at the academy. But that’s the core of it I guess. This is my FIRST assignment and I’m the Tactical Officer on a battleship? I knew my brother pulled some strings to get me on this crew, but I thought I’d be a gunner, or something like that.

Audition Line #3
(Furiously angry) No, he did! It fits! He turned his back on me! He SPIT on the graves of our parents... Everything they raised us to believe!

Steven Jacobs, Cheif Navigator/Pilot

(M, mid 20's, generic North American accent)

Personality: Steven (never Steve. Don't chop his name in half) is the friend we all wish we had. Confident and sure of himself, Steven has a natural way with people. Steven possesses in abundance two things he considers imperative to life. Buckets of can-do attitude, and the ability to think very quickly and talk even faster.

Voicetype: Steven always sounds like he's got a cocky grin. He's Han Solo with less ego.

Audition Line #1
(this is an old joke) EN. Steve-EN. Just cause you hate your name doesn't mean you can chop mine in half.

Audition Line #2
(Pride. It's not boastog if you can back it up) This old battleship is a lumbering beast, but in my capable hands? I can make this pretty lady DANCE...

Audition Line #3
(grumpy and groggy) Dammit Cade, turn out the light and go to sleep. Our shift starts at stupid o’clock tomorrow…

Reginald Montgomery III, Executive Officer

(M, late 30's, British accent)

Personality: Proud and abrasive. Montgomery is the First Officer aboard the Argo, and most of the crew hate his guts.

Voicetype: Montgomery is highly educated, very balanced and rarely loses his temper, but when he does, it should sound like he might kill the person he's talking to.

Audition Line #1
My parent's call me Son. My superiors usually call me Montgomery....

Audition Line #2
(Expressing frustration in his log entry) Responding to the SOS was right and proper, but we should have dispatched our fighter squadron alone. Taking a ship with a faulty E.C.S. system into combat is beyond irresponsible.

Audition Line #3
(walking a fine line between pride and hate for what it means for his life) The man who, before the Second Inner Planet War, was the face of the independence movement. The statesman who rallied a bunch of terrorists and malcontents into something like a government... who was assassinated on the final day of the war... He was my grandfather.

David Erickson, Chief Engineer

(M, mid 40's, -North American- midwestern or southern accent)

Personality: The gentle fatherly type that no body wants to cross.

Voicetype: He has an easy going drawl. He never gets angry.

Audition Line #1
(with the air of a wise old man explaining to the whippersnapper that water is actually wet, for the fifth time) It's lag from the charging batteries Jacobs. Once we're under our own power, everything will balance out.

Audition Line #2
(You are very tired) I am amazed this ship is space-worthy sometimes. It was such a rush-job getting her ready for this mission, I know we must have missed SOMETHING.

Audition Line #3
(Encouraging a young engineer) This ship isn't exactly Solar Federation standard. I wanted to make sure we had an expert on the Argo, so a friend of mine in Personnel got a bottle of Old Kentucky and we got you.

Melvin Timms, Gunnery Officer

(M, mid 20's, any accent)

Personality: Very cut and dried. Melvin is a gunner. He like to shoot the big guns. It makes him happy.

Voicetype: Tends to be reporting information during battle. Lots of energy, but not shouting.

Audition Line #1
(crisp military discipline) Vertical angle plus two. Main guns ready to fire in barrage pattern!

Audition Line #2
(crisp military discipline) Main guns tracking the Dreadnought and the lead cruisers independently! Ready to fire!

Audition Line #3
(emotionally moved by the sight of a beautiful alien) Looks... ethereal, like an angel.

Pulsar, Communications Officer

(M, mid 20's, any accent)

Personality: Pulsar is a hippie. He's very in tune with the cosmos. But when it's time to work, all the floaty hippy-ness goes away.

Voicetype: Smooth, calm. Positively unflappable.

Audition Line #1
(Pleasantly in tune with the cosmos) The Universe through me expresses joy at meeting you, Cade Morgan.

Audition Line #2
(very pleased) Affirmations. The whole is wiser, and nobler than the sum of her parts. We are but facets of the whole, trying to understand the great mystery of life.

Audition Line #3
(all business) Confirmed. Course verified clear by Earth Ground Control. We have permission to depart.

Tommy Harrison, Flight Second

(M, late 20's - early 30's, any accent)

Personality: Tommy is an unlikely fighter pilot. A former class clown, he's serious when he needs to be, but he takes it upon himself to make everybody laugh when they need to.

Voicetype: Tommy feels things very deeply. His heart is always on his sleeve.

Audition Line #1
You know it's weird how much you talk to your fighter, right? (pause for a a full second) Sheesh, don't glare at me like that, I'm sorry!

Audition Line #2
(mutters to himself sarcastically) Yeah well the Admiral's 'reciprocity' is climbing up our thrust manifolds...

Audition Line #3
(reporting in during a battle) Making our fourth pass now Silk. Whoever these guys are, they don't know when to quit. We've vented most of his hull to space and scans say he's losing reactor containment, but they won't even respond to calls to stand down.

Carlos Jimenez, Ship's Quartermaster

(M, late 20's, slight hispanic accent)

Personality: Carlos is meticulous. He's the ship's quartermaster and he knows not only how many supplies they have, but where they all are and who was probably last in the room where they're stored.

Voicetype: Carlos always speaks from a position of knowledge. He never says something he isn't sure of.

Audition Line #1
(summing up their situation) We're set for air, food, and water. At least short term. The Protein-Recyclers are operating at peak, but there's always some aggregate loss of nutrition every time it goes through the system. We'll eventually have to resort to supplements.

Audition Line #2
(this is tricky to explain) Yeah... the more complex an object is, the more materials the computer's gonna waste in it's construction. Sheet metal's easy. Circuitry's hard. What we really need is a lay over at a ship yard for a full resupply.

Audition Line #3
They should be ready in the next forty eight hours. We managed a lot of salvage after the fight, including a nearly functional Gallman emitter. Ours are far better and stronger, but it gave us a good start point.

Dr. Vladimir Gregorov, Chief Medical Officer

(M, late 40's – early 50's, Russian accent)

Personality: He has the bedside manner of a brick. Blunt, and rock solid. That said, he cares deeply for the lives in his care. To support them, or soothe their pain, he's perfectly willing to throw the rule book out the window.

Voicetype: He's a tired old man, but don't cross him.

Audition Line #1
(irritated)How would you like to fall asleep during a physical and wake up with different length arms?

Audition Line #2
(reporting status of wounded) Little change. Everyone we CAN treat is stable. I released the three Black Tiger pilots we had down here just a few moments ago. We still have fourteen people in cryo-stasis until we can get them to a proper hospital. Their wounds are just too extensive to treat here.

Audition Line #3
(bluntly) Well, you are perfectly healthy, for someone who has a lousy sleep schedule, irregular food intake and is five months pregnant.

John Sinclair, Proud Marine and Loyal Son of Earth

(M, early 20's, any North American accent)

Personality: Young man for whom the words 'Code, Corps, and Honor' mean everything... but he finds himself in a world where they are in conflict.

Voicetype: Earnest young man who always says what he believes.

Audition Line #1
(shocked by a sudden reunion) LIZ?! What the hell, where have you been?!

Audition Line #2
(He doesn't believe wheat he was just told) That's crazy... The Valbarden said any Sol-Fed personnel were being released....

Audition Line #3
(sarcastic) Yeah, right... IF it's here, and I don't believe it is, then it's in the central complex. That place is a rock-solid fortress. You got an army stashed somewhere?

Tyler Simmons, Downed Pilot

(M, early 30's, any accent)

Personality: Tyler is a big lug of a guy who almost always has a wide, dopey smile. He's a fighter pilot, but when we meet him for the first time he's a P.O.W., and he doesn't get to fly again until the very end of the series. Hes the sort of blunt, confident person who never quite realizes that sometimes his humor rubs people the wrong way.

Voicetype: Tyler has a deep, resonant voice. He sounds like he gets mistaken for a small hill fairly often.

Audition Line #1
(annoyed) Great. Six, no, seven of us to take down a high security bio weapon's facility... and we're on a clock. Terrific...

Audition Line #2
(he just met a new friend in prison) Tyler Simmons. Guess we're cellmates. Let me help you onto the bunk.

Audition Line #3
(Someone just asked if he was a pilot. Bardies is a disparaging term for his jailers.) Gee, did the SolFed pilot suit give it away? Yeah, I'm a pilot. Fought in the battle out at Alpha, but I got left behind. Freaking Bardies... scooped me up and dumped me here. You?

Jack Watts, War Hero, who just want to forget the smell of blood.

(M, mid 50's, any North American accent)

Personality: Gruff former solider who did terrible things in the last war, and just wants to live peacefully with his son. When they are dragged into the current conflict, he reluctantly takes up arms again.

Voicetype: He's very gentle normally, but when he or his own are threatened, he gets downright scary. Think Wolverine, with less gravel.

Audition Line #1
(cutting through the crap) Hugs and reunions later. Pilot, you proficient with a rifle?

Audition Line #2
(a sergeant giving orders to his squad) Good. Here, take the guard's rifle. I'm point. Miss Bishop's tail. You two in the middle. If my son gets hurt Pilot, I'll shoot you myself.

Audition Line #3
(Softly. Trying to calm a young girl who is frightened of him) That's right. Liz helped me get my son, I helped her get Tyler.

Mark Watts, Petulant 20-something, reluctant resistance fighter.

(M, early 20's, any North American accent)

Personality: A young man at a crossroads. He just graduated college with a degree in computer science, but he lives in a small town and is trying to figure out what comes next. When the Earth is invaded, he gets caught up in events as his estranged mother is an important figure in the Earth's military.

Voicetype: Mark is almost whinny when we first meet him. He settles into a more even keel as the story progresses.

Audition Line #1
(Being grudgingly social) Hi, I'm guessing you're Cindy, right? Tyler told me about you during the trip over here. I'm Mark.

Audition Line #2
(Board and tired of his assistant's whining) You know, you don't HAVE to help with this. I can manage on my own.

Audition Line #3
(You think he's way overreacting) Dad, It's Mossyknoll. Not Neo York. The people there know her and accepted her. What can happen?

Baharuk Gau

(M, 50's-60's, Gentle british accent)

Personality: The Leader of his race, Baharuk Gau is very dignified, staggeringly intelligent and almost terrifyingly calm. He is almost always unflappable, unless his friends or family are threatened. He has a sore relationship with his daughter, but he still loves her.

Voicetype: Baharuk is a Valbarden. They speak very carefully, enunciating each syllable with precision. They do not use contractions, or obfuscate their feelings. Think Vulcans from Star Trek. When I was writing him, I was picturing David Warner's voice.

Audition Line #1
(sad, regretful) These are our first weapons of war in uncounted eons....

Audition Line #2
(firm, just a hint of anger) You see this as a necessary evil, but I see something far, worse. I see our doom out there, and we crafted it with our own hands... What have we become?

Audition Line #3
(Making a speech too our entire galaxy) People of the Galaxy. My name is Baharuk Gau. My people, are the Valbarden. We have seized and peacefully hold the territory of the Solar Federation.
I know this day has been difficult, but our actions were taken only after lengthy consideration and at direst need.
The Valbarden come from an existence outside your universe. It is a place much, much older than this. It is now in the twilight of it's existience. Soon, by our reckoning, it's night will fall.
However, this process has been hastened by - your - actions.

Zanza Gara

(M, 30's-40's, Gentle british accent)

Personality: Arrogant and convinced of his own superiority. Zanza Gaara is the commanding general of the Valbarden military. He is convinced that all beings who not Valbarden are lesser lifeforms.

Voicetype: Zanza is a Valbarden. They speak very carefully, enunciating each syllable with precision. They do not use contractions, or obfuscate their feelings. Think Vulcans from Star Trek. That said, there's soften a tone of challenge in his voice.

Audition Line #1
(He wants very much to obliterate the upstart 'lord' he's talking to) I am here to remind you of your obligation to us. The present Gallman fleet is to be recalled and dismantled. We will replace them with newer ships, more technologically sound ones. It needn't be done all at once, but it must begin, (firm) now.

Audition Line #2
(speaking to his lord, urgently trying to change his mind) My Liege, you are downplaying the seriousness of the situation. We should exterminate these people at once! Should they find the secret of the pure form of their precious Wave Motion Technology, they will destroy us!

Audition Line #3
(thinking he may need to overthrow his lord) His answer to the human's growing confidence is to field a fleet crewed by our own people? Does he not understand the price we will pay in blood? Even victorious, we will lose many lives... We two, you and I, may need to take steps to prevent that s well.

Lawru Kesh, Fighter pilot

(M, 20's, Gentle british accent)

Personality: Arrogant and convinced of his own superiority. Lawru is a fighter pilot in the Valbarden military. He is convinced that all beings who not Valbarden are lesser lifeforms.

Voicetype: Lawru is a Valbarden. They speak very carefully, enunciating each syllable with precision. They do not use contractions, or obfuscate their feelings. Think Vulcans from Star Trek.

Audition Line #1
(he's strapped down on an examination table) Release me at once, you cowardly beasts! Hiding behind that opaque window does not scare me. I pity your small minds...

Audition Line #2
(Softly, amazed.) YOU! But that was long ago.... and far form here. How are you in this place? Have you come to rescue me? Sarahn Gau?

Audition Line #3
(ashamed) I cannot. I remain merely a third level practitioner of the art. But you, you are a twenty-second level, or at least, you were, be-times. Can you take us both from this awful place?

Emperor Desslok

(M, elderly, but not too quavery. Light British accent)

Personality: Desslok is a LEGENDARY figure in galactic history. He is the Emperor of a civilization that spans three-quarters of the Milky Way galaxy. Unfortunately, he is at the very end of his life. As he looks about himself, he sees naught but enemies.

Voicetype: Desslok once had an urbane, light British accent, but his voice has since roughened, and aged.

Audition Line #1
(reflecting at the end of his life) It's amusing… Historians and other scholars drone on about what I have accomplished in life. But very little of it, nothing of note at least, would have happened without the Argo and her crew.

Audition Line #2
(candidly) It's true, I asked the Solar Federation to come to Gallmania in the hopes of smoothing relations between my people and yours going forward… But that is only the public excuse.

Audition Line #3
(sadly) I have no heirs. No close friends. I look about me and I find none but enemies. Even those loyal to my rule aren’t truly fit to carry on the work… I dread the chaos that is to come, Captain.

Masterson, Loyal Sevant to the Emperor

(M. Mid Forties. Any Accent)

Personality: Solid and dependable. Masterson is the Majordomo, and strong right hand, of Emperor Desslok. He does not suffer fools or sycophants and runs the court with an Iron fist, and sterner gaze. No one messes with Masterson.

Voicetype: Masterson does not mince words, nor is he overly blunt. He speaks clearly, and concisely.

Audition Line #1
Excuse me, Captain Venture. I am Masterson, Majordomo to Emperor Desslok. My Imperial master requests you attend upon him at your earliest convenience…

Audition Line #2
(lost in sad thought) My Emperor... I will carry out your wishes.

Audition Line #3
(With a tone of contempt) Jenner. I've no time for your games.

Fleet Admiral Kine

(M. Late 40's, early 50's. Any accent)

Personality: The highest ranked Admiral of the Gallman military, Kine is a favorite to become the next Emperor. He may or may not even be accelerating the process. Of course, no one dares to say so in his hearing...

Voicetype: Cold and calculating, yet suave. Kine is a predator.

Audition Line #1
(Politely sizing up prey) I wanted to meet you both before things become too… progressed. These soirées (swa-rays) are usually tedious enough, but the tension at this one…. Quite distasteful.

Audition Line #2
(interrupting) Peace? Forgive me, Captain but if peace was your objective, why did you choose so… problematic… a vessel for your deputation? Surely you must realize the thinly veiled threat that such an infamous battleship carries with it. Particularly to the ship’s former enemies.

Audition Line #3
(Briefing his captains) Once the snare is laid, it will be baited. A sizable portion of our main fleet will warp in, rallying just outside the range of the defending ships. Our fleet will fire several planet-buster proton missiles... (With an evil grin) the BIG ones... at the Valbarden's Sphere itself.

Admiral Boti Rukali, Soldier in service to his Nation

(M. Late 40's, early 50's. Any accent)

A loyal soldier of the Empire, Boti Rukali is a legend in the imperial service. His fame as a commander extends far beyond the borders of the Empire, but he's not really comfortable with it. He would prefer to follow orders, and further the Glory of Gallman.

Voicetype: Capable and confident. Boti Rukali is almost more a force of nature than a man. His voice is the sort of deep rumble one would associate with a soldier used to giving order, and then racing his men to be the first through the breech and face the enemy.

Audition Line #1
(Hesitant) Captain... I hesitate to say this. By doing so I am... bending... a rule nigh to breaking. But you are our guests, and we should not send you blindly into battle. I'm sure your own intelligence services briefed you on matters in the Empire to the best of their ability. But things are... tense right now. Extremely so. You need to be very, very careful.

Audition Line #2
(a bit off. He doesn't want to give offense, and he doesn't want to break his orders) Ah. Captain, Gentlemen, forgive me, but mine is not a diplomatic visit. In fact, the political office ordered me specifically not to meet with the civilian staff in any official capacity.

Audition Line #3
(With something of a smile) I myself have developed a fondness for Terron food and beverages. Coffee, in particular. I would enjoy swapping stories with an old warrior such as yourself, Colonel Sheridan.

Minya, Imperial Ex-Chequer

(M. Late 50's, early 60's. Any accent)

Personality: Minya is an accountant playing at deadly politics. He's a tremendous coward, but his high position in the Empire makes him useful. He's a remora, swimming safely in the shadow off powerful sharks.

Voicetype: Minya's voice pitches a little high and he's prone to hysterics. But when he feels safe, his tone is acerbic and often rude.

Audition Line #1
(with the tone of someone who thinks themselves superior) Look at all the pathetic would-be predators...

Audition Line #2
(worried, very worried) He's moving without us. If you hadn't bugged Masterson's office, we'd never have known about this.

Audition Line #3
(grasping at straws) Who says it has to be public? We'll just have him murdered!

Jenner, Head of the Poltical Office

(M. Late 50's, early 60's. Any accent)

Personality: Jenner is the Gallman boogeyman. He's the head of the political office, and chief of the secret police. He's a schemer, and a snake. If you've drawn his notice, don't turn your back.

Voicetype: Jenner often speaks with a tone quiet menace. He doesn't raise his voice unless he's well and truly furious. His voice is silky smooth, and there's always a knife hidden in his words.

Audition Line #1
(Counseling caution) Don’t be so sure, your Excellency. The will of the people can shift quite easily. Counting on a popular up-swell to sweep us into power is risky…too many variables for me.

Audition Line #2
(Picture holding a knife to the fool’s throat. Cold, deadly.) Cower? What do YOU bring to the table hmmm? I concede we will need your funds in the aftermath... But you command no troops, possess no strength of arms. What ARE you? Except the money?

Audition Line #3
(icily) What was that? (Pause a moment then angry) How dare you! How DARE you imply that I am any less loved that that lowly son of a pirate who came before me! He wasn't even Gallmanian, just some luckless vagabond from a planet we'd never heard of... Who are YOU to even tread on my SHADOW?!?!

General Faust, The good right hand (and knife) of Admiral Kine.

(M. Mid Forties. Any Accent)

Personality: A scion of the aristocracy, General Faust is the person Admiral Kine turns to when he needs some quiet, bloody work done. Faust is very, very good that his job.

Voicetype: Faust always sounds like something of a bored aristocrat. Even at the height of his bloodlust, he's always just a bit...disappointed.

Audition Line #1
(amused, but businesslike) Very well, I'll meet his shuttle in the bay. Have it cleared of all non essential personnel. And purge all mention of this in the ship's records. If he's coming here, this is an off the books mission.

Audition Line #2
(bored, but polite) Captain Venture, I presume. I am General Faust. Fleet Admiral Kine has ordered us to convey you to the border via the swiftest and safest route. We're sending you warp coordinates on a sub channel.
(this is meant to be a bit creepy) After all, we wouldn't want such... distinguished guests... to encounter any trouble out in the ether, now would we?

Audition Line #3
(the rabid wolf licking his chops) Writhe, Argo! Show me your glorious death...

Captain Raijilio, up and coming officer

(M. Late thirties. Any Accent)

Personality: Self assured and confident, Raijilio is seasoned Captain in the Gallman Imperial Navy. A loyal son of the Empire, e is supremely convinced of it, and his, own invincibility.

Voicetype: A trifle arrogant and even cocky.

Audition Line #1
(Reporting in, a bit bored actually) Strike Leader, all vessels have reported ready status via blinker code. Strict radio silence has been observed, per your orders.

Audition Line #2
(Said with a wolfish smile) Excellent. I have never seen the Sapphire Angel fly in actual combat. I look forward to it.

Audition Line #3
(Said in a firm, commanding tone) Send the cruisers forward as a screen, have them bracket the Argo!

Admiral Drake, Chief of Naval Deployment, Solar Federation Headquarters

(M. Late 60's, early 70's. Any North American accent)

Personality: Drake is an old soldier. He's been in the Navy for most of his life. He's a senior admiral of the fleet and a fixture at Naval Headquarters.

Voicetype: Drake is half kind old grandfather, half canny warfighter. His voice is weathered and gravelly, but not weak.

Audition Line #1
(Smiling) Interpreting regs for a senior officer is insubordination you know.

Audition Line #2
(He wants to get to the truth) Captain James was quite… thorough. But I don’t want you to tell me events, just answer one question. WHY did you board the ship against James’ direct order?

Audition Line #3
(You're upset with the person you're talking to, but sort of proud of them at the same time.) The incident at Barnard’s Star proves two things. One… that as a first officer, you are a dedicated pain in the neck. Two, you have the instincts and the guts for command. It’s time you worked without a net.

Ambassador Benedict Sheridan

(M. Early Fifties. Any Accent)

Personality: Ben Sheridan was a colonel in the Cosmo Marines. He was a cunning and formidable warrior, but when the wars ended, he turned his attentions to mending the fences wrent by bloodshed. Now, he's dedicated to peace, and finding solutions to problems that benefit all sides. Of course, when that's just not possible, the Colonel is still a fair hand with a astro-automatic.

Voicetype: Sheridan's role was inspired by Liam Neeson, so that's a good starting point.

Audition Line #1
Excuse me, Corporal. I know ship's resources and crew are stretched a bit with the accelerated refit. The Captain is extremely busy tending to her duties, (emphasize this, you're talking to the senator as much as the helpful security guard). We are pleased to wait on her convenience, aren't We Senator Lane?

Audition Line #2
(explaining his colleague's attitude and presence) I hope not. Lane is... well, he's a jerk. But he's a rising star in the Foundationalist Party. His presence on the mission was something of a compromise. I meant what I said though, in all matters pertaining to the ship, or any military situation, you have absolute authority.

Audition Line #3
Sir, they were watching your daughter. My sack of tricks came from the death squad Kine sent for me, may they rest in peace. The thug I stashed in her closet was there to kill HER.

Edward Morgan, pivotal figure

(M. Late twenties to early thirties. Any North American Accent)

Personality: Edward Morgan is a highly educated man. A brilliant economist, he works with the Federation Council on Planetary Development to help strengthen the web of worlds and trade routes that make up the Federation itself. When the opportunity rises to work with the Federation's nearest neighbor, the Gallman Empire, he umps at it.

Voicetype: Suave and fiercely intelligent. Edward is a driven young man.

Audition Line #1
(Teasing his little brother) Hey, if your course work and test scores weren’t so high, you wouldn’t have made it through Officer’s Training already. You’d be entering as a lowly crewman and get the REAL grunt jobs.

Audition Line #2
(Witnessing an awe inspiring sight) When you think that scarcely half a century ago, this world was a blasted wasteland... It's truly impressive.

Audition Line #3
(attempting to calm flaring tempers) Gentlemen, perhaps the Senator and I should see if the terminal the Captain mentioned has been installed yet, and familiarize ourselves with it's function?

Senator Paul Lane, Congretional Representative

(M. Early Fifties. Slight Southern (U.S.) Accent)

Personality: A political animal from the get go. Paul Lane is a conniving, manipulative and dangerous man. Lane, is out for Lane.

Voicetype: Paul Lane sounds kind and folksy. I was picturing Mitch McConnell when writing this role.

Audition Line #1
(with a tone of explaining gravity to a child) Well, this IS why we're here. To try and improve relations with whomever follows Desslok into power.

Audition Line #2
(mild disbelief) Really? Scion of a fine military family like you? I'd have thought this would be old hat to you.

Audition Line #3
(Pompous)That is entirely unacceptable. Such messages would be private and require close security. We require our own independent system...

Mr. McHenry, Officer on a SolFed cruiser

(M, late 30's, any accent)

Personality: Career Officer on a Solar Federation cruiser

Voicetype: Competent, almost grandfatherly.

Audition Line #1
(warmly) don’t tell the Captain I said it, but... congratulations.

Audition Line #2
(crisp military discipline) Aye Captain.

The following Roles could be any gender

Series Narrator
(Any gender, age or accent)

Voicetype: Clear, convcie and well enunciated. The Narrator should have a good ressonant voice. They are responsible for reading episode intros, scene setting lines, as well as extros and episode credits.

Audition Line #1
(almost epic movie trailer voice, but not quite THAT campy) Forward Momentum Presents... Sea of Stars... Odyssey!

Audition Line #2
The Earth is the possession of an extra-dimensional species known as the Valbarden. The peace humanity enjoyed for decades has been shattered. The cries of war echo throughout the galaxy.

Audition Line #3
Heard in this Episode were: Alan Smithee as Michael Vega

"Zero," the voice of the ship's computer
(mid 20's, any accent)

Zero is actually two roles. One is the voice of all the computers aboard the Argo, the other is the voice of one specific A.I. installed in one of the character's fighter planes. That A.I. has a bit more personality, otherwise think the computer from Star Trek.

Audition Line #1
(Go get `em!) Systems at maximum combat effectiveness!

Audition Line #2
Warning! Target Vessel's engines in overload!

Audition Line #3
(Inquisitive) I know you and Tommy had time set aside to spend on the shore. You are here, he is not, and you have not yet changed your clothes. This indicates your return was sudden. Was the time not to your liking?

“Sensei”, fighter pilot, old hand.

(Any. Mid to late 30's. Slight Asian accent.)

Personality: Sensei is a bit old for a fighter pilot. They don't tend to have long lives during war time. That said, they got their call sign when they did a short stint as an instructor at the Academy. Sensei was assigned to the Argo so they could keep their flight-line hours up.

Voicetype: Sensei is very calm and measured. While we ARE looking for an Asian accent, we don't want an over the top one. As a fighter pilot, the character would need to peak clearly over a com frequency, so a thick accent would be almost unintelligible.

Audition Line #1
(Warning their wingman during combat) Watch it Tomtom! Their leader's right on your tail!

Audition Line #2
(a bit frantic, this fight is TOUGH) Silk! These guys are swarming like angry hornets!

Audition Line #3
(climbing over and examining a new type of enemy fighter) Hey! I found what looks like a canopy release.

McMillan, junior officer

(Any. Early 20's, any accent)

Personality: A competent, but unspectacular officer, McMillan fills in for the other navigation officers if one of them is off the bridge.

Voicetype: McMillan is unsure and tends to be very timid. It doesn't help that half the time when filling in, the senior officers mistake McMillan for someone else...

Audition Line #1
(The enemy is approaching!) Warp fields forming all around us! Fore and aft!

Audition Line #2
(Just addressed by someone else's name) Um.... Working on it, Ma'am!

"Nutjob", fighter pilot. Just what the name implies...

(Any. Early 20's, any accent)

The pilot's name is NUTJOB. Somehow, I don't think all their oars are in the water.

While they ARE a bit crazy, they have to be sane enough to stay flying. Don't go too loney tunes with the voice.

Audition Line #1
(Warning a firend of danger) Watch it Hammer! There's a dozen on your tail!

Audition Line #2
(Enthusiastically charging the enemy) It's just like an arcade game back home! Woohoo!

Incidental Roles

There are SEVENTY- FIVE incidental roles to fill. Generally speaking, anyone who is cast in one of the roles above will be assigned a few incidental roles as well, just to fill out the list. But if you'd like to be one of our "Incidental Brigade", just record the sameple dialog below and send it in. We WILL find a role (possibly many) for you.

The Incidental Brigade is a wonderfulway to get your feet wet in voice acting. A number of our biggest performers started with Incidental roles in an earlier production.

Sample Dialog
These can be recorded in any style or emotion you choose.

"Hey!"

"Excuse me?"

"Hold it!"

"What do you mean?"

"Yeah, some of the guys were talking about it."

"WOah..."

"Go, Local Sports Team!"

"The Tachyon Inducer's stuck in subliminal refractory mode. It keeps dropping out of synch with the Heizenberg Compensator."

"They're all over me....AHHHHHHhhhh"

Record some dialog from SOMETHING. Recite lines from a movie, read a book, anything. We use these passages to create crowd murmur.

Thank you, and good luck!
